Applying CSS class styles while in Design View

Can someone please tell me how I can apply a custom CSS class styles, eg: .mainheader, to text while I am in Design View. I can do it with the standard styles, eg: normal, paragraph, formatted, but how do I select a custom created class styles (begins with a .)
