Is it possble to style a range of text appearing in the sytax editor ? For example setting the background colour of a given line of text to a certain colour.

Yes you can achieve various forms of customized dynamic highlighting via the use of classification taggers and/or adornments. The QuickStarts show a number of those sorts of things.
