This may have been answered already, but I had trouble locating anything on the subject. Does Code Writer have the ability for developers to create user defined syntax, for highlighting purposes, while we are programming? If not, is this something that will be implemented in upcoming versions?

It's currently just limited to the file types we've defined ourselves. Adding support for custom file types is something that may be done in the future, but for right now we're focused on rewriting the app in Universal Windows Platform with a fresh new design. You can see progress on that front on the @CodeWriterApp Twitter account.
