It makes it a LOT easier to bind from/to. The enum only has two state, wordwrap (word) or not. As of now converters are required when I want to bind it.

In SyntaxEditor vNext (see our blog for development progress... it's not released yet), we actually already have added a SyntaxEditor.IsWordWrapEnabled property that can be used instead of WordWrapMode if you like.
