Can't select whole line

So, an oddity.  When I'm trying to select a block of text, instead of actually selecting the lines, it will select just a basic rectangle, not the lines.  Meaning, if I hit delete, it will only delete part of the line.  It's not all the time, but there seems to be no pattern that I can determine on when it happens.
