VS 2008 somehow lost 3rd toolbox icons including SyntaxEditor's. Is there a tool that does reinstall them? Reinstall of SyntaxEditor didn't help for some reason.

Maybe try the Reset Toolbox command in VS. If that doesn't bring them back, perhaps try reinstalling again after doing it. One of those should probably do it.

I'll try but in the meantime you might consider creating such a tool (that does register your components) - many 3rd party vendors ship such a tool for their products.

I'm sorry, I made a mistake in my post. In our WPF controls installer, we do have it auto-install toolbox icons. However in our WinForms installers we didn't get to add that feature yet. So you would have to customize the toolbox in VS and browse to the assembly to add its icons.
