selected an xml file to edit
code writer hung for a while then crashed
not impressed.

Hi David,
Sorry, that definitely shouldn't happen. Is there anything odd about the file, such as is it enormous or is it very large and only on a single line (no line breaks)?
If you'd like to post it (or something similar that causes the same problem) up on the web somewhere, we can try and open it here and see if we can repro the issue.

which was after the last post in this thread.
