How can I change the backcolor of the tabs and or the dwManager? I have tried a few things, but they didn't affect the back color.

Right now you can't do that... however in the major revision of docking controls that we're working on right now, you're able to totally draw any part of the docking controls yourself or change colors for the default drawing routines.
