Is there any way to get out of the Spider FTP client if a connection fails. Currently, I am using Windows 2000 Task Manager to stop the FTP client, but this doesn't seem like a really clean way of exiting. How about a STOP/CANCEL button that is checked in a timer loop?

Generally when connections fail, the client tells you and you can proceed normally. However in some cases, it seems to keep trying to connect and you have to do what you describes. The problem is that we use FTP functions that Microsoft provides for programmers. When we call their function to connect, if that function stalls and never returns, the client never regains control and can't stop the connection attempt and proceed normally. We are looking into some ways to force the connection attempts to time out on their end if they're stalled.
