The only reason something wouldn't appear correctly in design view is if you use server-side tags (such as ASP or Cold Fusion), client-side scripting (Javascript) or some non-standard tags like EMBED, OBJECT, etc.

Try viewing a simple document first to see if design view works at all. It should. Then copy your document and in the copy, trim out pieces of it until it starts working to determine what exactly is causing the problem.
